Two men – Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, Pharisees and followers of Jesus – chose to endure ritual uncleanness hours before the Sabbath to ensure that Jesus’ body was cared for after His crucifixion. Sabbath progressed at an agonizingly slow pace for the women who wanted only to complete the preparations they felt Jesus deserved and that were dictated by Jewish law.
God, however, had a plan. Jesus’ body would not require any attention. During His hours on the cross, Jesus in His incarnation satisfied the wrath of God against humanity. This required His death. Now, on the third day following His final words on the cross, Jesus would assure His followers that He had also secured eternal life. He rose from the grave as the Conqueror of death. His atonement gave life.
This study puts all of the post-Resurrection appearances of Jesus on full display for us to gain a greater appreciation for how God works in and through us who have the power of our risen Lord.
